I originally put this tutorial together for [personal profile] century_eyes, but I thought I'd go ahead and repost it here in case anyone else could get some use out of it.

If you primarily use package files for your custom content and have noticed increased load times and/or lag in your game, follow this tutorial to combine your CC into fewer, larger packages to fix the problem.

Open S3PE and choose 'New.'

Right-click in the big empty white area and select '(EXPERIMENTAL) As dbc...'

Select the files you want to combine and let S3PE do its thing. This may take a loooooong time; don't panic and just let it keep working.

You'll probably get this popup. Hit 'OK.'

Arrange the innards by instance number, select all the XML files with an instance number of 0000000000000, and delete them. (Note: There's a checkbox at the bottom of the S3PE window that says "Sort" - you have to check that box before you can arrange by instance.)
This step is outdated. S3PE automatically deletes the XML files that need to be deleted. Don't touch the others.

Repeat steps 2 through 5 as needed, then save your file. This may also take ages to finish, so just let it run. This new package is the only thing you'll need in your downloads folder for all your CC to show up, so remove the uncombined packages. I keep my uncombined files separate in case there are things I want to get rid of later on.

You can combine combined packages, and it's ok to add more things to your combined packages at a later date.

I'd suggest instead of making one huge package of all your CC to have four or five, only because when I tried to make a single package things started to blow up. I've got Objects, CAS (hair, clothes, makeup), Patterns, and my own crap as their own packages.

I've not combined Default Replacements (never sure if I'll switch those out or something), my hacks, and AM/story progression.

Very easy, and holy shit it makes a huge difference. My game now loads as quickly as it did before I had any CC in it, and no longer lags at all.

This is the original thread on MATY.

Anach has offered up this additional information, which is very useful:

1. If you have a merged a mod and wish to update it with a newer version, you will need to re-merge the entire package, or you will usually experience game breakages.

2. The game imposes a limit of 200MB on its own merged packages (dbc), however a package can be anysize, and the only limitation is processing time (larger takes longer) and filesystem limits.

3. Try to keep your total number of mod packages under 100.

4. You can also remove ICON type files (junk files used by sims3pack) and "THUM" (thumbnails) if you wish the game to generate its own thumbnails rather than use the ones provided in the package.

More Useful Information from [personal profile] darlas_mom:

"When I tried this, I ended up getting the scary-as-hell "Service initialization failed (0x065d0274)" error and had to uninstall and reinstall.

It turned out a piece of CC I'd installed that day right before doing this was bad (because the game still didn't work until I removed it, cleared my cache files again and then rebooted), but I'm still scared to try this again...uninstalling and reinstalling takes me forever because then I have to download 500+ MB of patches all over again. :-/

Just wanted to make you and others aware of this possibility, so that if it happens to anyone else, they don't panic."

In other words, make sure you don't have any corrupted CC before attempting this.

For anyone getting the 'Materials Materializing' error:

"I have some extra info that might help people who run into the "materials materializing" error. It seems that it occurs when patterns are combined with other items. And also if CAP patterns are turned into package files. So combine patterns just with other patterns, and leave CAP patterns sims3pack. I delete CAP files as fast as i can because they have brought me only troubles."

(Thanks for reminding me about this, Jolanda.)

Hioh! I'm just trying this out for the first time, and I thought I'd let you know a couple of little things... I'm using the version of s3pe dated 1 Oct 11 and after shift-clicking to select my package files s3pe requires me to name a package file to put them in (there's no file-naming step in the tutorial, or did I miss it?).
Also (bonus!), there was no XML pop-up (and no visible XMLs in the package-so already removed?) and the thumbnails are already marked for deletion. Thanks for taking the time to make and share this!

Totally Small Files

Date: 2011-11-21 12:00 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Hi, I did everything as in this tutorial, but my files are incredibly small afterwards. I mean, I combine files, that altogether are 187MB, but after they're combined, the file is only 32MB. I combined only about 14 .packages, because I downloaded some incredibly huge file size clothes. (from Rusty Nail, to be precise) I wanted to ask, is it supposed to be like that? Thanks! :D

Question

From: (Anonymous)
Hi! If I have Mods folder about 2,8 GB and 'Downloads' folder about 1,9 GB, from the guess of it, is my game going to be slow? Also, if I want to combine all my mods, with which way game is going to be faster - combining all the 2,8 GB in one .package file OR making 14(?) .package files? Thank you! :)

I found that my game didn't load faster after I combined my packages.

I do have several GB of sim3pack CC though. Would it be worth it for me to convert and install them as combined packages?

I always found that sims3packs loaded faster than packages but with this technique maybe packages could be more beneficial than sims3packs.

Hi! I was just wondering, out of curiosity, how long does it take for you to load a Save Game/World ? Do you think, that a little bit more than 3 minutes is quick? Thank You! :)

CC not showing up

From: (Anonymous)
Hi there,
I recently got a new laptop and re-installed my CC. I wanted to combine my package files(as I had on my old laptop) and did, but nothing's showing up in-game after everything's been combined. I was just wondering if you have any ideas about causes or fixes, and if you do, I'd really appreciate knowing. Thanks!

i don't know why it's happening, since i followed your tutorial step by step, but my merged packages end up with ridiculous small sizes, like 72kb or something, and nothing shows up in the game. do you have any idea about what's going on?

So.
I followed everything In the tutorial.. Merged and deleted packages. And yet.. The game Is still painfully slow x__x
Also, I didn't get that XML pop-up.. What am I doing wrong? D:
This Is what my Mods folder Is like; I keep my CC organized.. For example.. I have a folder for a certain type of CC like female clothing and another folder for another type of CC like Skins.. Should I get rid of those folders and have the Merged CC mixed together? (Sorry if I'm not making any sense..) And/Or should I just squeeze all of my CC together into a single OR 4-5 package(s)? HELP T^T

PS.. I'm slow ._."

I'm a bit confused. I follow steps up to when it's time to select the packages I want merged. I select the packages, hit enter, and then the loading bar fills up a bit and then my packages folder shows up again as if I didn't select anything but if I close it out it shows me a list of random numbers and codes that can be saved as a package file. What do I do from there? I tried it out and saved it as one package file, put it into my game, and my game looked as if I didn't have any cc or mods in it at all. :/

Well I tried to sign up for a Dreamwidth account but apparently I'm "entering codes too quickly" so it won't let me. I just wanted to drop by and say THIS IS WHY I LOVE YOU!

My game had major lag and was just retarded. I did everything you said, and had a few problems with S3PE, but once I put everything through the Compresizor, and then put the new merged packages through it again, it's not working so efficiently PLUS loads of CC that I previously downloaded but didn't show up have no shown up! :D THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! <3

What I did was, I put everything into folders according to what was being merged (like groups, one folder = one package) and then I copied all of them into a completely different area of my computer, so that if anything went crappy with the merged files, I could easily just revert back to all my singles. I think that might be an idea for everybody! ^_^

Awesome!

Hi,

Is this mod updated? I just found out about it. Tried everything. When I was done, I started my game but it wouldn't load. And all my package files were converted. I tried to go the old way, but my game crashed due to the unofficial mods :(
I thought it would be really helpful to reduce the load time and the lagging.
